We’ve all probably heard this our whole lives; looks do not matter, true beauty comes from within. But how true is this concept? Why does it always seem like people believe that this is true, but will concurrently turn someone down or immediately judge them for being unattractive? Yes, maybe looks really do matter. And we agree that your appearance is the access to your own personal branding. It is the first thing someone sees, and right or wrong, it is one of the first things we judge and are being judged upon.
The 21st century are remarkable in terms of how the beauty standards have become more demanding and strict. And we believe that right now, the most attractive people are always the one who benefits.
For example, in employment. Studies have shown that attractive people are being preferred to work in an office in comparison to their unattractive counterparts. Two people may have the same exact qualifications who’s applying for a job and they should be equally considered. However, the examiner may prefer to accept the more attractive applicant simply based on their appearance. According to Schneider et al., 2012, Unattractive people are not only less preferred than attractive people, but are statistically treated unfairly in general. There is an evidence of unattractive people being rejected from job promotions, and are even considered to be more capable of engaging in a criminal behavior.
This is probably the reason why people are getting engaged in doing a plastic surgery.
Plastic Surgery is an operation wherein it allows a person to change its image to a new and more beautiful appearance. For Delchien and I, when we think of the word ‘plastic surgery’, the first things that come to our minds are unattractive faces, insanely pouty lips, watermelon breasts, and big booties which looks so big and unnatural. There are different kinds of plastic surgery, some are for cosmetic and some are for medical. And right now, we are talking about Cosmetic Surgery, it revolves to changing our looks. People who are discontent with their appearances have different ways of improving the way they look, such as makeup, or clothes, and cosmetic surgery is one of the options.
Do we support this?
Well, we both think that it somehow helps people build themselves. Self-confidence is probably one of the most important thing a person can gain from cosmetic surgery. And for us, it’s their own skin, their own money, their body, and they can do whatever they want with it. Everybody has the right to feel better with their looks if they want it. Yes, we know that self-love and self-acceptance should be promoted. We should embrace ourselves for who we are—our flaws, quirks and how we look. But the thing is, does it make you really happy? Because if not and it truly bothers you about how you look on the outside, especially if it stops you to live the way you live your life, then you should really consider to seek those options. We think it is okay for them to go ahead; do it and fix what’s need to be fixed.
You should also be careful on doing this. Think carefully. And before going under the knife, make sure to do some research, weigh the pros and the cons, ask the right questions, find the best doctor you feel comfortable with and should be a professional one.
However, if you abused doing this, it will probably be a problem. Yes, some people take it too far, and yes, there could be dangers, but there are dangers in everything you do. Cosmetic Surgery can be addicting. If you keep on doing this, it will probably damage your face. When a person thinks they’d do a single improvement, the temptation to keep “adjusting” one’s appearance can become overwhelming and lead to unpredictable and often sad results. There may have a constant desire to undergo surgeries. This may result to complications on your body. If a fail occurs during the surgery, you can’t undo it. You cannot return to your natural look if you feel discontent with the surgery. You will have to undergo another surgery to get your original look, or try to improve on your previous plastic surgery. You can’t undo plastic surgery, so once you undergo it, you will have to live with it forever. Think about it carefully.
One example is the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson, who did multiple changes on his face. In the end, his face made drastic changes and became unrecognizable.
Before we end this, we want to remind you (if you’re planning to get a surgery), make sure you are doing it for you and only you. You should never change yourself for anyone else. What others say don’t matter, don’t listen to them. Otherwise, you’ll only go back to where you began: unhappy, insecure, and all of that time, money will go to waste, and recovery isn’t worth that.
